The program goal for the Mississippi Association of Diabetes Educators is to assist professionals wishing to expand their knowledge in diabetes self-management and to improve the effectiveness of diabetes care in their patient population. Objectives: 1. Discuss the pathophysiological causes of type 2 diabetes. 2. State 3 goal setting tips to help clients with diabetes set appropriate goals in regards to AADE 7. 3. State 2 standards of care goals from ADA and ACE. 4. State 2 counseling skills helpful in engaging the patient. 5. Describe 2 teaching methods appropriate for patients with different educational levels. 6. Explain the relationship between diabetes and physical activity. 7. Discuss physical activity guidelines for persons with diabetes. 8. Discuss the pros and cons of all available oral treatment options for type 2 diabetes. 9. Explain the pros and cons of all available insulin in the treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. 10. Describe a systematic approach to looking at blood glucose readings for pattern management. 11. Identify common pitfalls in blood glucose management. 12. Explain how insulin pump therapy could produce positive blood glucose outcomes. 13. Compare the mechanism of an insulin pump to the physiology of a pancreas. 14. Describe the diabetes presentation in women across the lifespan. 15. Discuss role of diabetes as a significant CV risk factor for women. 16. Recognize the new trends in insulin therapy. 17. Discuss the benefits of glucose monitoring in diabetes care. 18. Identify five coping strategies for living with diabetes. 19. Be able to identify microvascular complications of diabetes and the treatment options. 20. Be able to identify macrovascular complications of diabetes and the treatment options. 21. Describe strategies for improving management in the inpatient setting. 22. List the systematic barriers to inpatient management of hyperglycemia. 23. Discuss the options for pharmaceutical management of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. 24. List recommended standards of care for lab tests and evaluations. 25. Discuss ways to connect patients with diabetes self-management training. CEU Credit: This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the American Association of Diabetes Educators, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. This program, 2008-011 is approved for 14 contact hours.
American Association of Diabetes Educators, (AM001) is a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Accredited Provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) from June 1, 2006 to May 31, 2009. Registered dietitians (RD) and dietetic technicians, registered (DTR) will receive 14 continuing professional education units (CPEUs) for completion of this program. Continuing Professional Education Provider Accreditation does not constitute endorsement by CDR of a provider, program, or materials.
The American Association of Diabetes Educators is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Speakers: Caryl D. Sumrall, BS, MSN, is a nurse practitioner with the Diabetes and Metabolism Center at the University of MS Medical Center. She provides specialized diabetes care at the Jackson Medical Mall and University for patients with diabetes. Teresa Tittle, RN, CDE is a Diabetes Outcome Specialist for the Diabetes Treatment Center at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, MS and has been a CDE since 1997. Autumn Douglas, LDN, RD, CDE is the Manager of Clinical Services for Animas Corporation and provides basic diabetes education, pre-pump education, blood glucose education and intensive management of patients with both type1 and type 2 diabetes. Patricia (Mickey) Stuart, MPH, MS, CDE is a diabetes educator and health educator. She is employed as a CDE by Innovex and part-time with Central Mississippi Medial Center. Amanda J. Wilburn, Pharm, D., CDE has a doctorate of pharmacy and is a Certified Diabetes Educator at Cross City Medical Clinic in Corinth, MS. Toni Cooper, RN, MSN, CDE is a diabetes educator and diabetes program coordinator for the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS. Susan P. Mixon, NP-C is a nurse practitioner at the Diabetes Clinic at the Jackson Medical Mall and is a Liaison/Consultant between the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the Delta Diabetes Project’s clinics in Clarksdale and Grenville. Dr. Annette Low is Director of the Center of Excellence in Women’s Health at the Department of Medicine and OB/GYN and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University Mississippi Medical Center. Kathy Warwick, RD, CDE is a Certified Diabetes Educator and owner of Professional Nutrition Consultants in Jackson, MS. She has over 20 years experience in diabetes care. Gail Fant, RN, BSN, CDE is a Senior Diabetes Clinical Consultant and sensor specialist for Medtronic Diabetes. Sharon Davis, RN, CS, MSN, NP, CDE is a nursing supervisor for Riley Hospital in Meridian, MS and works part-time as a psych nurse practitioner at East MS State Hospital. She is a nurse practitioner and CDE. Debbie Williamson, RN, CDE is a Clinical Education Specialist with Smiths Medical MD, INC. Kitti Parman, RN, CDE is a Diabetes Outcome Specialist for the Diabetes Treatment Center at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, MS and has been a CDE since 1997.
